PYP 2019 BEGINS

PYP 2019 BEGINS

After the delay of the 2019 Nigeria elections, the long awaited PYP tutorial session for 2019 kicked off on 23rd of March. At 9.00am grade 6 students in response to letter of invitation sent to all the public primary schools in Festac Town, Lagos, Nigeria assembled with their parents/guardians in toe at SaltHill school, the venue for  this year’s PYP tutorial.

A team of 18 volunteer teachers and interns were stationed at different  duty points to carry out registration for students, parents/guardians or conduct a reading test for a student.

The reading test has always been an essential part of the PYP tutorial registration process  in order to determine the different needs and abilities of the students and group them accordingly. We use the Reading Skills Assessment Tool together with The San Diego Quick Reading Level Assessment Tests to determine a good placement for each pupil and ascertain where they need help. A total number of 120 pupils were admitted into the 2019 PYP tutorial session and based on their reading levels were divided into three classes: with 45 pupils grouped into Grade 1-2 class, 45 pupils in Grade 3 class and 30 pupils in Grade 4-6 class. Those in Grade 1-2 would be further divided into groups of five students to one teacher for focused learning to bring them up to speed in our maiden group learning program; HelloClasses.

The following day, 24th March, 2019; registered students returned for a maths test under close supervision of volunteer teachers and interns who were present. The results from the maths test were then used to determine students that would need focused sessions in HelloClasses.

At the end of the whole exercise, it was indeed a successful day for teachers as they better understood each pupil’s strengths and areas of weakness. In the weeks to come, these tests will help teachers teach better and help students learn faster and better. With great excitement, both volunteers and students look forward to the classes to come and we all can’t wait to see the great improvements each lesson will bring for both!
