IMPACT CHAT “TEACHING KIDS ABOUT CONSENT”

Our PYP Impact Chat Instagram live session on the topic “Teaching Kids About Consent” was such an enlightening one. We are very grateful to Ajibike Kolade the founder of She Cares Charitable Foundation for an insightful conversation about teaching children about their bodies, sex and consent as current or future parents. We also discussed about rape, the stigma and healthy approaches to abolishing rape culture and victim blaming. The session couldn’t have been a success without our amiable host Chinaza Ubanagu and our engaging audience, we were all carried along and shared our opinions and thoughts on the topic. Thank you to everyone who tuned in. Here are a few of the notable points shared on the session, feel free to swipe. You can also watch the recordings of the Chat on our IG TV https://www.instagram.com/pyp_kids/.

  • You can start educating your child about their bodies, sex and consent from an early age of 3 years.
  • It is important to teach children about self-awareness from a young age.
  • Though either parents can do a good job of educating their child about sex, it is widely acceptable for the Mother to teach the daughter and Father to teach the son because of relatability.
  • Boys and Girls should be able to understand that consent; that No means NO and No does not mean Yes or Maybe.
  • Children should be taught to speak up whenever they are in uncomfortable situations or have had uncomfortable experiences with anyone.
  • The boychild should be encouraged to express his emotions and not suppress them
  • We should teach children to always be conscious and be careful of their environment and the company they keep.
  • We should all reach out and show understanding to victims of sexual abuse and refrain from mocking their ordeal. It will encourage more victims to speak up.
  • Parents should never discriminate against their children regardless of their gender. There is need to enlighten parents about sex education.
