PYP SUMMER PROGRAM 2020.
PYP SUMMER PROGRAM 2020.
Introduction
It was an amazing time filled with enlightening and fun moments with the PYP kids on the 28th and 29th of November, 2020 for the PYP 2020 Summer program.
Despite that the year 2020 has had a lot of uncertainties, we took up the opportunity to ensure the year didn’t go by without the summer program we organize every year for our PYP students, and indeed it was successful.
The PYP summer program is aimed at mentoring students on life skills that they would find useful in their new journey through secondary school and in life in general. For this year we had a 2-day program, focused on these five courses:
- Confidence and Self Identity
- Money and savings
- Leadership skills
- Career development
- Skills acquisition
Before the day of the program, we had sent out invites to a randomly selected group of our registered students, who could participate in the program, and on the first day, Saturday, 21 students joined us as we kicked off the Summer program for the year.

Confidence and Self Identity by Dipo Dele David
In this class, the students were taught what the term confidence and self-identity mean, and ways they can build confidence which includes:
- Learning, as it helps one to be more confident when they know what they are talking about
- Celebrating the small wins
- Fake it till you make it: this is by convincing people that one is confident through body language and action and with constant practice, this would become one’s reality
- Embrace conflict: to be able to express oneself respectfully in the face of conflict and others opinions about you, etc.
Career development by Benita Bulley and Grace Kagho
At the beginning of this class, the facilitator engaged the students in an ice breaker called “Charades”, which had the whole class laughing while guessing what the player was miming.
After the game, the second course for the day began with questions on what they understood by career, interest, skills and talents. The facilitators shared various examples of career paths to help the class understand better and they were taught how important it is for them not to lose focus in the process of achieving their desired careers. The students were made to form a group and then list out skills in alphabetical order, then, they were told to individually write a skill they are interested in. Also in the class, they were taught ways to determine their career choice and how to acquire the skill they are interested in.
After the second class, we had a 30 minutes break during which the students were provided with the snacks and drinks prepared for them which they all enjoyed.
Before each class, the students were made to write down KWL an acronym for K- what I know about the subject matter, W- what I want to learn about the subject matter, and at the end of the class L- what I have learned.
Leadership, Teamwork, and Patriotism by Andah Onotu
After the break and KWL, the next facilitator of the day took over, who shared a definition of leadership which is: leadership is influencing people to achieve a common goal, he shared that it takes constant practice before one can be a leader. Afterwards, they were taught the qualities of a good leader. On patriotism, they were taught to be patriotic to their nation by being good ambassadors of the country anywhere they find themselves
Money and savings by Benita Bulley
The students were taught that money is a medium of exchange, the facilitator went on to share ways that they as students can manage money better, which includes: earning money, saving money, investing money, and giving money. They were taught that a good way to manage one’s spendings is by creating a budget and prioritizing what is important.
This was the last course before we called it a day on Saturday, the students were asked not to come late for the second day. We ended the class on a good note after a photography session with the students and their facilitators.

Skills Acquisition
The second part of the Summer program commenced as planned, the skill acquisition was, “how to make ankara notepad”. The moment the students saw the materials for the class, their excitement heightened, the materials provided were:
- Ankara material
- Book
- Gum
- Scissors
Miss Benita taught them all they needed to know about making ankara notepads. The students were given their materials and they watched and practiced what she had shown them. Miss Chidinma and Miss Damilola were there to assist the students.

Conclusion
It was such a wonderful time with the students and we are excited to be able to impact positively in the lives of the 2020 set of PYP kids. We hope all we have taught them becomes a good part of them and helps them in making an informed decision even as they grow into adulthood!
PYP 2020 academic year was brought to a close with the successfully concluded Summer Program, all thanks to our partners, sponsors, volunteers, and volunteer facilitators from all over the world who made this possible. Thank you for believing in us by contributing towards making such a positive impact in the lives of these students. We pray for many more years of IMPACT! We thank our partnering school, Anchorage Field School for their immense support throughout our academic year, we also appreciate the Anglican Church of Pentecost for giving us a venue to use during our Children’s Day Outreach, and we are most thankful to God for another successful completion of the Summer Program and PYP year.
