May 27th: National Children’s Day
Children are a bundle of joy and hope of continuance for generations. It is only appropriate that a day be set aside to celebrate them.
All around the world, countries set out a day to not only examine the importance of children in our society but also to address whatever challenges affect them. Nigeria picked the 27th of May which was formerly Empire day as Children’s day.
As has been customary over the years, on this day, children are granted a holiday from school and are encouraged to participate in marches and several other exciting activities that help throw some light on the various issues that affect children in the country. Some of these aforementioned issues include lack of access to quality education, poverty, disease, lack of access to basic healthcare, child trafficking, child abuse, to name a few.
Children are at the heart of what we do at PYP which is why every year, we organise activities that serve as a reminder to the society about the importance of education to children and also as a platform for the children to give back to the society in their little way.
In the light of recent events, we revisited our priorities and decided to turn them towards helping the children and their families who have been worst hit financially by the pandemic. We were able to organise a successful fundraiser to this effect, thanks to well meaning Nigerians. While we will not be having an event like in the years before, we have come up with a plan to distribute care packs to these families on the 30th of May, employing strictly the required safety measures. We will give more details and pictures about this subsequently.
As Pablo Casal said:
“A child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn’t been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him.”
Remind your children that they are miracles today.
Happy Children’s day!
