Hello Class

Hello Class is an avenue for students in primary six (grade 6) with poor reading ability to have focused tutorials and catch up with their mates.

Basic understanding of Maths is necessary for the average student and more importantly is the ability to read. English Language is the language of instruction in schools in Nigeria yet quite an alarming number of public school pupils in primary six (grade 6) are unable to read. Several reading tests carried out to about 200 students yearly in our locality have shown that about 30% fall below the grade 2 level of reading with 86% below the grade 6 level of reading.

In 2019, PYP began to offer primary six pupils with grade 1-2 level of reading ability a special HelloEnglish class and additionally if needed, a HelloMath class where pupils are provided a focused tutorial in small groups to help bring them up to speed within six months from March to September.

We introduced an internship program for senior high school students to become HelloGuides, serving as tutors to the younger pupils with poor mathematical or English abilities. PYP pupils and HelloGuides are grouped into teams of 5:1. The students and Guides are trained using the PYP Buddy System where they are allowed to learn and practice English or Maths together with their Guide who introduces the subject topic and helps them when they have difficulties. We have discovered from our larger tutorial program that our pupils learn better and faster when they collaborate in smaller groups. Students in a group together with their Guide will set monthly goals which will be used to review their progress. HelloGuides benefits from the internship experience by receiving monthly stipends, recommendation and other perks of being a part of the PYP community.

The HelloClasses are free as they are for children in the public schools enrolled in the PYP program who cannot afford quality education.
The cost of the HelloClasses per pupil is 3000 Naira monthly which is a total of 18000 Naira for the 6 months training.

Payments can be made monthly or in bulk sum for the six months per student. A single one time payment is also welcome
